snow bird

Caught this Snowy Egret hanging out in the city, relaxing outside a small snack shop near the bridge.  People who come here to escape the snow and ice are called “snow birds” so there is a sort of joke here somewhere.

The irony is that many Snowy Egrets apparently do not migrate.  According to some migrate and some don’t.  This particular one seemed to be pretty happy where he was.

  1. How do you tell them apart? The Sibley Guide gives little help except to note that the Little Egret has a long “head plume” that extends to the back. There are some minor things having to do with coloring but most of the suggestions are not very useful. Leg color maybe?
