a Skimmer skimming
This was not the easiest photo to get. It was very early in the morning, just as the sun was starting to come up, so I had to use a high ISO setting on the camera. It was actually darker than the photo appears.
The bottom part of their beak is slightly longer than the top. They drag that bottom part through the water as they fly to catch small fish near the surface.
allaboutbirds.org says “it is largely crepuscular (active in the dawn and dusk)” so I have now learned a new word. I can totally relate – crepuscular is a good thing to be in Florida, especially in the summer.
