Young Skimmers on Lido Key

Saturday, when I was out on Lido Key beach, there seemed to be a good number of immature Black Skimmers.  A storm earlier in the summer had destroyed a lot of the nests so it was good to see that the surviving chicks had made it this far.

The parents were still in a protective mood and would harass people walking the beach who came too close.   The swooping and squawking made a few people stop and turn around, even though they weren’t actually very close to the nests.

I like the pattern of the feathers.  Instead of the usual all-black there is an interesting artistic looking design of white and grey.
