Immature Purple Gallinole
Earlier this summer there were a couple of Purple Gallinole that had chicks. They built their nest a few feet from a boardwalk at the Celery Fields so it was possible to follow the progress of the chicks as they developed. When I first saw them they were little black puff balls with the distinctive red area above the beak, but when I took these photos a couple of weeks ago they were adult size. They are just starting to have signs of the brilliant adult coloring. I like the subtle shading though. And of course there are those feet.
