It is hard to see from a photo like this how large the Anhinga can get. A couple of years ago I was sitting by the bank of a small stream at Myakka River State Park when an Anhinga popped out of the water and sat on a tree branch a few feet in front of me with a fish in its beak. It startled the %&#@% out of me. These things can get big. Also, they don’t have oils in their feathers so when they go diving for fish they get soaked and are constantly having to sit quietly with their wings spread out to dry off – which makes them look even larger.
