American Bittern

I spent some time yesterday trying to get a decent photo of this American Bittern.  It wasn’t easy.   It always kept some of the grass between itself and the people on the boardwalk.  At one point it went under the boardwalk, made a brief dash across some open space and then back into the grass again.  The photo below is the best I could do.

I love digital photography and would not want to go back to film and manual controls again but when you rely on autofocus a bit of grass in the foreground can be maddening.

  1. Great shot. Yes it’s frustrating. But an fstop is sharp one third in front two-thirds in back, use if you have it the depth of field button on your camera, manual focus or adjust up one fstop.
