The value of shade

A Tricolored Heron fishing.

At first I assumed that the wings being extended was just a way to balance as it moved around looking for fish, but after seeing the photo I think that maybe it was using the shadow from the wings to get rid of the glare on the water.

Also, the bright blue around the head indicates the Heron is moving into breeding season. They get even more colorful than that.
